Doyle said he wants to increase the tax on Salem Cigarettes by $1.25 per pack, up from the $0.77 now charged.Doyle said that he'll ask lawmakers to approve the tax increase and smoking ban in his State of the State address next week. Some find the proposed cigarette tax hike shocking, but it's shock value that Doyle said he was going for in order to discourage people from smoking."Tobacco companies for years agreed to 10 cents there, 15 cents there because they made a little bit more money and it really didn't have an effect on smoking rates. A dollar and a quarter I think everybody would agree will have a very, very sharp effect on smoking rates," Doyle said.Doyle said the tax hike would bring in money to pay for smoking-related illnesses and cessation programs. The Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids said that Wisconsin's current cigarettes tax ranks 30th among the states. The group said that the proposed increase would make it the fourth-highest.Doyle will include the tax increase proposal in his budget proposal. It would have to be approved by the Republican-controlled Assembly and Democratic-controlled Senate. Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch, a West Salem Republican, has said he would oppose any tax increase.

Locally, they're still a rare breed. Only two Cigarette-brand boats are currently registered in King County, according to the state Department of Licensing, while the registrations for two other Cigarette boats expired in June, meaning they could've been sold or have not yet been taken out on the water. But a number of other boats registered fit the size, brand and price range, if not the brand name, including those made by Donzi, a company Aronow also founded. (A Donzi speedboat was featured in last year's "Miami Vice" movie.) The boats can range in price from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on size and make.Greater affluence has contributed to the increasing popularity of powerboats in the Northwest. But some are too loud and fast for urban freshwater environments, Grady said. Having local authorities police them is like having "a Volkswagen Bug for your police car, trying to chase down somebody in a Maserati," he said. Most boats used by local law-enforcement agencies top out at around 70 mph, but local marine-patrol officers say they've never had to chase down a cigarette boat. There's no speed limit for boats traveling outside Lake Washington's no-wake zones, though boaters can be cited for reckless driving. 555 Belomorkanal Bond Camel Chesterfield Dallas Davidoff Dunhill Epique EsseGauloises Karelia Kent L&M Lucky Strike Magna Marlboro Marlboro Mild Seven Monte Carlo More Pall Mall Parliament Peter I R1 Rothmans Russian Style Salem Sobranie Sovereign Viceroy Virginia Slims Vogue WestWinston

The tobacco industry went on trial Monday, with a trust representing asbestos workers demandingbillions in damages for a wave of death and disease allegedly caused by a combination of asbestos and cigarettes.``It really boils down to a simple phrase: Pay your fair share,'' trust attorney Ed Westbrook told the jury at the opening ofthe high-stakes trial in federal court in Brooklyn. The trial, expected to last two months, has become the latest battleground for Big Tobacco and those who say itconspired to conceal the dangers of smoking .It pits a trust made up of blue-collar workers, many of them lung cancer victims, and their heirs against R.J. Reynolds,Philip Morris, Brown & Williamson and other tobacco giants.Attorneys for the plaintiffs say the civil fraud case could result in damages exceeding $3 billion and improve chances for afar-reaching settlement of similar lawsuits brought by insurers and other third parties who want the tobacco industry toshare the cost of treating patients with cigarette-related illnesses. In a courtroom packed with dozens of lawyers, Westbrook accused the tobacco industry of engaging in a decades-longconspiracy to hide and distort scientific findings that asbestos workers who smoked were five times more likely to get lungdisease than the average smoker. The evidence, the lawyer said, includes an internal Philip Morris document detailing a 1968 meeting in which companyresearchers acknowledged that cigarettes posed a higher risk to asbestos workers. Despite that, the companies ``did nothing,'' Westbrook said. ``They sat silent for decades.''
